Abstract:
Distributed denial of service (DDoS) attacks on the application layer has been a major threat to the security of web servers. By submitting multiple benign HTTP requests, these attacks evade most intrusion prevention mechanisms. As most of these attacks are launched unexpectedly and seriously, it is beneficial to detect and minimize these attacks as quickly as possible with a fast intrusion prevention system. We propose an efficient protection framework in this article, called SkyShield, which leverages the sketch data structure to easily detect and minimize DDoS attacks on the application layer. First, we recommend a fresh estimation of the divergence between two sketches, which reduces the effect of network dynamics and increases the accuracy of detection. Second, we use the abnormal sketch to make it easier to identify malicious hosts of an ongoing attack. This enhances SkyShield’s efficiency by avoiding the reverse calculation of malicious hosts. Using real attack data collected from a large-scale web cluster, we have developed a prototype of SkyShield and thoroughly evaluated its effectiveness.
